We
now recommend Leptospirosis
vaccine for many
of our patients.
What
Is Lepto?
Lepto
is a bacterial disease
that infects dogs
as well as other
mammals.
The disease
affects the liver
or kidneys and causes
serious and, in
some cases, fatal
illness.
Lepto can
be transmitted to
humans.
How is Lepto transmitted?
Leptospirosis
is most commonly
transmitted through
the ingestion of
infected urine or
rodent contaminated
garbage.
However,
some forms of the
bacteria can be
transmitted through
damaged skin or
cuts in the skin.
How Is the Vaccine Given?
TO
START the vaccine
is given in 2 doses,
3-4 weeks apart;
then it is given
as yearly boosters.
It
is a 4-way vaccine…takes
care of 4 different
strains of Lepto
Can
be given along with
other vaccines
Allergic
reactions were a
problem with old
vaccine but newer
vaccines have been
much safer.
What
Dogs should be vaccinated
for Lepto?
Dogs
that go hunting
Dogs
that go to dog parks
or hiking
Dogs
that are boarded
regularly
Dogs
that attend doggie
daycare regularly
Dogs
that take trips
to the south regularly
Dogs
that may contact
urine from wild
animals or other
pets
Why
Shouldn’t ALL Dogs
Be Vaccinated?
Vaccination programs are now “custom-tailored” to a dog’s
likely exposure
to disease.
Over-vaccination should be avoided.
One should
always weigh the
risks of exposure
to disease versus
the potential side
effects of the vaccine
If
you have additional
questions or concerns
regarding Leptospirosis
feel free to ask.
