Crusty Cracked Nose

Dear Dr. Berg,

I’ve noticed that as my dog has gotten older, his nose has gotten crusty and appears cracked in spots.  It doesn’t seem to bother him but I am wondering if there is a problem or if there is something that I need to do.

M. B., Newark,

Dear M. B.,

Much like a callous, the nose can develop a thinkened exterior; the fancy name for this is hyperkeratosis.  This can be normal for many dogs and does not usually need any treatment.  If it seems irritated or too dry, you can try putting a small amount of vasaline to moisten it as often as necessary.  If your dog licks it off (and most will!), it won’t hurt him a bit.  Vasaline can also be used internally in cats to help relieve hairball problems.
