Dog Questions
Dear Dr. Berg,
We're planning on taking our dog with us when we go camping and are wondering if we should bring along a first-aid
kit? What should be in it?
I am very proud of you for thinking ahead on behalf of your pet. YES, please pack the first aid kit right next
to your dog's sleeping bag and pup tent. Or is it a Dog tent?
Several items that I would recommend that you put in your kit would be: 1) A rectal thermometer and Vaseline lubricant,
2) Bandaging supplies (gauze, cotton, white tape, elastic tape), 3) Bandage scissors, 4) Clean cotton or gauze,
5) Pepto-Bismol (to coat digestive system), 6) Hydrogen peroxide (to clean wounds and used to induce vomiting),
7) Antibiotic skin ointment. 8) Good Boy Treats to give when trying to medicate your dog.
Please remember that when your pet hurts, he may bite the hand that feeds them (YOU). The gauze in your kit can
double as a muzzle (ask your veterinarian how to tie it on), or you can use a belt or nylon stocking (who wears
stockings camping?).
In addition, be SURE that there is a collar on your dog with addresses and phone numbers, and any vital information
that is needed (diabetic, allergies, etc). A film container taped to the collar can make an excellent way to keep
this information safe from the elements.
And don't forget to test your dog's collar to be sure it cannot slip off. A lost dog in strange territory is very
very hard to find, and puts a major crimp in one's vacation
